Hi, i'm looking for some information about proper export to gmt becouse I have problems with normals of car parts.

I got Latest 3dsmax 8 plugins from ISI

There's an option tu "Use MAX Normals" I Edit Normals in max, looks good, but export it to GMT - looks terrible. Looks same with Shading None and Smooth, with Facet every face is flat and GMT file is bigger

is the "detatch to element" is the only way to have proper smoothing? If it is so what for is the "use msx normals" ? or i just make something wrong ??

Sorry for my bad english...

Hi,

yep, it could be that you see the smoothing as correct in Max but it turns wrong when you export.

First be sure you have all the vertex of each element correctly welded, and apply the "Reset Xform" utility to discover which triangles aren't correctly oriented. Flip these who are wrong.

And of course you have to apply the detach to element function to make the smoothing look good, as well as to use always smoothing group 1 (and only that).

You can find more details about it in a thread located in this same section, i guess you didn't see it: http://historicgt.8.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=1778

Thanks, I just thout that the Editing Normals helps with smoothing without detatching to element...

I read topic about flipped normals before writing this one, i can say that if you mirror an object its always flipped, and my method is to create a simple box, attatch the mirrored part to it and delete the box - this works also

ok, i found it what i was asking at start (maybe I wasn't clear enough to understand me :/ ) - the smoothing by Editing Normals option thing...

if faces has any smoothing group it doesn't work, only without them ('clear all' to make sure) and than add "Edit Normals" modifier so we can make smooth surfaces as we want, and no "detach to element" is needed

of course the "Use MAX Normals" is needed

its more time to make the surface smooth in proper way but I think it can look better on corners, edges itc.
